Obituary: Evelyn 'Lefty' Cobb MacDougall, 102, Of New London
Apr 13, 2018Born on May 20, 1915, in New London, she was the daughter of Ernest "Skip" and Ann Tyler Cobb. She married John Tweedy MacDougall, former president of Byles-MacDougall Funeral Service, Inc., on September 26, 1936, in Pequot Chapel. He predeceased her in 1999.Lefty graduated from the former Williams Memorial Institute in 1933 having held the office of president of her class in her sophomore and junior years. She was employed by E.B. Patterson, Inc., dealer of Packard and Dodge cars, from 1933 to 1936. During WWII, she worked for the American Red Cross and later served on the board.Lefty enjoyed bridge, gardening, dancing and was an avid golfer. She was a member of the former New London Country Club for over 65 years, past president of the Women's Association and a past member of the Connecticut Women's Golf Association. For over 70 years, Lefty spent her summers at Pequot Point Beach enjoying the company of her close friends "The Peaches."Committed to the Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, she was a life member and former treasurer of "The Auxiliary," member of the L.A.M.B.S. since its inception, previous co-chair of the "Hi Fever Follies" and co-founder of The Coffee Shop.She was a member of the First Congregational Church in New London, Child and Family Agency since its inception and charter member and former treasurer of the Thames River Garden Club.Lefty is survived by her two daughters Ann LaPlante of Niantic, Jane Sherwin of Brattleboro, VT, two grandsons and their spouses Mark and Lyn Sherwin of Stowe, VT, Rob and Chrissy LaPlante of Waterford, four great-grandchildren Casey Sherwin D'Alberto and her husband, Nick, of Essex, VT, Bailey and Tyler Sherwin of Stowe and J. R. LaPlante of Waterford.Besides her husband, Lefty was predeceased by her brother and sister Tyler Hastings Cobb and Jane Cobb Fagan, son-in-law Richard Sherwin and a grandson John Tyler Sherwin.Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 14 at Byles-MacDougall Funeral Home, 99 Huntington Street, New London with burial to follow in the Cedar ...
